Highlands and Islands: Scottish North Coast

To pick up on a long-abandoned thread, this is a follow-up to my last post about my graduation road trip around Scotland with my family in the summer of 2018. The previous post was our trip from Skye to Ullapool.

On day 5 of the trip, we drove to Thurso via the North Coast 500. We saw the Scourie beaches, Durness and Smoo Cave. That night, we spent the night just outside of Thurso.

Everything started to look very different north of Ullapool – so scenic and dramatic. We also got some great weather!

We found the best little camping area to stop and eat by the beach, which had crystal clear teal water!

Then we were back on the road!

Then we stopped in Durness, which is home to Smoo cave. It’s also a really cute little town.

There is a trail that leads down to the cave.

When we arrived, we found out there were tours available, which my mom and I opted for.

Then we got back on the road on our way to Thurso.

Check out the next post, which is about our day trip to Orkney!
