Highlands and Islands: Skye, Applecross, and Ullapool

On our final day on Skye, we got out early to go to the southwest corner of the island to see the Cuillin Ridge.

We set off to Elgol, which is where you can get a little ferry or just a boat tour. We opted for just a boat tour.

I think this part of the island gets a fair bit of wind…

We eventually found the bay where we would get the boat – it’s where the road ends. After waiting a bit, we got on the boat!

Our guide was very knowledgeable and nice. He chatted to us and also told us all about the surrounding isles, which was more interesting than what we were actually going to see – the Cuillins. They were a bit hidden by the clouds.

We also had a canine friend on the boat with us!

We saw seals!

By the time we headed back, it started to clear up and it looked so amazing!

We then headed off Skye and on the way we were looking for a picnic spot.

We found the ruins of a church and ate in the cemetery in the sunshine with some amazing views.

When we were almost off Skye, we found this really amazing beach and the sky was so blue!

We then headed to Applecross, where we were looking for beaches along the scenic route towards Ullapool.

We ended up on this mountain pass road that had a bunch of scary warnings on it. It dropped off at points and was very narrow. There were passing places about every 3 car lengths. It took us a long time to make it to the top.

This is the view looking back down the road from the top!
At the top you could see the whole Isle of Skye!

Then we kept driving north – looking for white sand beaches I had been told about.

Around this point we realized we had probably passed the beach we were looking for, so we stopped at a little shop on the road. Inside there was this old man who let us use his outhouse and told us the beach was on the other side of the pass we had just crossed. We decided to keep going towards Torridon.

Our first view of Torridon.

This part of the drive was also really scenic.

After Torridon it was still at least another hour to Ullapool. When we got there, we arrived at our hotel and they offered us a wee dram, which we all gladly took after a long day of driving.

We went to the restaurant recommended by the concierge at the hotel and had another drink while we waited for a table to free up. They had picnic tables overlooking the bay.

After dinner, we saw the beginnings of a beautiful sunset. We rushed back to the hotel, because they had a great view of the water.

This was one of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen! It was bouncing off the water and the mountains so beautifully. Overall it was a great day with a really nice ending. We didn’t have any expectations for Ullapool, but we were really starting to like it.

We decided to make some time the next morning to see a little bit of Ullapool.
