Camping in San Bernardino National Forest

In May 2021, a friend invited us to join her camping up in San Bernardino and this is what happened!

We left at lunchtime on Friday, hoping to avoid some of the holiday weekend traffic, but we ended up spending 2-3 hours just getting out of San Diego. It turned a 3-hour drive into a 6-hour drive. We made it to the campsite just as the sun was about to set. We threw our tents up and got a moment to enjoy the view before it got dark.

We had planned to spend the afternoon around camp reading and hanging out, but we pretty much straight away had to make a fire and start prepping dinner.

Some others in the group had come later, so when they arrived, we ate our dinner around the fire. It got pretty chilly in the evening – around 40F/4C – so we really needed the fire!

We stayed up chatting for a while, and eventually got into our tents to sleep. Because we had spent so long driving the previous day, we ditched the plans to hike in the morning and opted to set up the hammocks and do the hanging out we had missed the day before.

We made some coffee and set up our hammocks. One of our friends brought his roommate’s very cute dog, Piper, who also enjoyed hanging out in the hammocks.

Eventually, we forced ourselves to pack up and head back to San Diego. The drive was so beautiful!

On the way, we stopped at a branch of one of our favorite taco shops, Taqueria 2 Potrillos. Their birria tacos are incredible!

When we got back, we showered and then met up with some friends (who did not come camping with us). We went to the best tequila/mezcal bar outside of Mexico. I got one of the margaritas, which are the best margaritas in San Diego, in my opinion!

At this point, it was only Saturday evening in our three-day weekend and we were wiped out! But we made the most of our time off, for sure.
