A Weekend in Charleston, South Carolina

At the beginning of October, I went to Charleston with my sister to see family. Here’s some of what we got up to.

Fried Oreos from Huddle House… tempting!

We arrived in the late afternoon and hung out with family. My sister wanted to go on a ghost tour, and we looked it up. There were only tickets left for that night at 10pm, so we reserved it and went. The tour we went on was of the old jail and the company is Bulldog tours. It was really cool – the jail was used until the 1930s!

I took a lot of pictures during the tour because I was hoping to see some orbs in my pictures, but I didn’t see anything unusual.

I like stuff like that, but there was one part when they turned off all the lights – I didn’t like that. It was super interesting and good to learn about the history of the building.

The next morning, we planned to go out to the tea plantation. On the way, we stopped at the Angel Tree, which is a 400-year-old oak tree on or near St. John’s Island. It’s really cool!

The drive was so pretty!

We arrived and one of the first things we saw was the trolley they would be driving around in! And framed beautifully by the Spanish moss, which is so, so beautiful!

Found this in the gift shop!
More Spanish moss

The gift shop is also attached to where they dry and prepare all the tea they produce there. This is the only tea plantation/farm in the whole US, so all of the tea produced in the US is produced in this room!

You can also try all their teas hot or iced in the gift shop and you can have as much as you like. I really liked their black teas – especially Earl Grey, which is one of my favorites.

We got in the trolley on the first tour.

We drove around the grounds and they told us the history of how the plants all got to this spot. It’s a really interesting story!

We got to see all the baby tea plants!

After seeing the plantation, we headed for lunch. I would definitely recommend going on the first tour. Not only was it a lot less full, but it was starting to get really hot by the time we were finishing up – even in October. We had lunch at the Tattooed Moose on St. John’s Island. I was super excited because my cousin told me they had mac and cheese egg rolls. They also serve gravy with their fries, which is so, so good.

Mac and cheese egg roll!

We then headed to the Terrace Theatre, which is an independent movie theatre, because we planned to see A Star Is Born. We wanted to escape the heat, but also the movie came out that day and we were excited to see it!

After the movie, we had to emotionally recover from the movie. We headed out again in the evening to meet our family for dinner at Mex 1. It was really nice and fresh.

The next morning, we parked downtown and walked around. I took pictures of some of my favorite buildings.

We went to one of the old churches downtown, where a different cousin got married a long time ago.

We then went to the market.

There wasn’t that much unique stuff, but I liked looking at the paintings and jewelry.

We then walked back to the car via a different route.

We then parked near the battery and walked through the residential area towards Rainbow Row.

Rainbow Row

We then went to Kickin’ Chicken for lunch with our cousins.

That evening, we walked their dog around the local little lake.

That night was our last night and we all watched a movie and had homemade popcorn! It was so nice to explore Charleston and see family! I love the historic homes. It feels so different to anywhere else I’ve been.
