Make sure to first check out the previous post about our day on Orkney! This post is about our journey from Pitlochry to Fort William with detours to see Loch Lomond, Inveraray Castle, Kilchurn Castle, Rannoch Moor, and Glencoe.
After our day on Orkney, we drove down the east coast to stay with our family friends on their farm near Pitlochry! I didn’t take many picture s, because we were mostly hanging out and the weather was so miserable and wet.
The next morning, we started driving towards Fort William.
This picture below is the only picture I have of Inverary from this trip, but if you want to see more, I went there a few years earlier (read about it here!).
Then we headed for Loch Lomond!
It was such a pretty day on Loch Lomond – much nicer than it had been the last time I was there, walking the West Highland Way!
Then we headed towards the Rest and Be Thankful.
On the way, we stopped along the side of the road at this really nice spot.
Then we reached our next big stop: Kilchurn Castle. To get there, we passed the turn off once or twice, then stopped at a hotel right on the loch and asked someone inside for directions. They gave us a map and we eventually found a place to park. Once we parked, we followed the signs and trail to the castle.
This was probably the most dramatic walk up to a castle. It’s on a little spit of land in the middle of the water. It’s pretty dramatic.
It used to be the stronghold for the Campbell clan, but they stopped using it when it was struck by lightning and the roof caved in.
We wandered around the castle for a while.
Then we got back in the car headed to Glencoe.
On the way, we got to see the dramatic Rannoch Moor.
Then we stopped on the road up to the ski lodge, where there is this great view of this little house with Buchaille Etive Mor in the background, which is one of my favorite sights in the highlands.
Then we arrived at Glencoe – one of my favorite places.
We drove down the road to a spot called Achnambeithach, which is one of the spots my mom and I went to on our first day in Scotland, when we didn’t really know where Glencoe was or how to get there.
Then after all of those stops, we finally headed towards Fort William, where we were staying for the next couple of nights.
Check out the next post, which is about our day trip to Mull and Iona.
